Working closely with Moss Architecture, MP Consulting Engineers prepared the detailed structural design on behalf of Robinson Construction / Waystone Ltd for a facility at Wakefield College’s Castleford site. The building includes the extensive use of precast concrete for thermal and acoustic purposes, varied internal atria spaces with link bridges and a viewing balcony as well as the integration of various forms of cladding systems fitted with the striking geometrical form. MP Consulting Engineers were appointed by the structural steel supplier to co-ordinate the structure brief with Moss Architecture, ensuring that the primary support requirements for following packages was successfully provided. Detailed design was required to confirm the structural performance at pre-determined movement positions, allowing articulated junctions to be developed to wall and roof locations. Of particular interest was the feature glazed roof light, which was designed in conjunction with the Architect to provide a primary steel support structure, the rear of which was required to overlap the movement joint location at roof level. The building structure was fully designed in Fastrak Building Designer, with the analysis model shared with the steel fabricator for co-ordination of connection design forces.
