MP Consulting were appointed in April 2006 by structural steel fabricators Robinson Construction under a design & build contract with HBG (now BAM Construction) to provide a detailed design of the main structure of a multi-storey mixed use development on a four acre site in Folkestone town centre. The scheme required detailed co-ordination with not only the main contractor and architect to achieve the client’s brief, but also with the sub-structure consultant to tie into concrete cores at each end, M&E consultant, specialist sub-contractors providing bespoke cladding and plant, and latterly the professional teams of tenants as the design progressed and units were let. Approximately 3000T of structural steel was designed by MP Consulting to meet a constrained program of four months to suit the main contractor’s phasing. The building design catered for the integration of reinforced concrete cores, cantilevered travellator, vehicle access ramps for a roof top car park, facade support for feature concrete and post tensioned mesh. The design program was achieved by utilisation of 3D design software which allowed for the transfer of information to both the architect for co-ordination and the steel fabricator for detailing of individual elements.
