Leicester College

ABOUT PROJECT

Lead Consultant Moss Architecture approached MP Consulting at early stages of the development of a new Motor Vehicle Engineering teaching facility at Leicester college. The site location off Painter Street is adjacent to the new Abbey Park Campus and is the first building on a potential Technology Park of 4 approximately acres. The site is bounded by canal basin, a lock on the grand union canal & the river soar. The building location was set to accord with future master planning of the skills village and also to avoid large existing public sewers of 1.4m diameter brick which traverse the site and discharge to the adjoining river. Design of the proposed MVE building commenced in September 2014, with and enabling the works contract at the end of 2014 to clear the site of historic slabs and relic foundations, followed by construction works in January of 2015. A steel portal frame design was adopted for the workshop area, designed to provide column free technical teaching space, with loading allowance to accommodate the extensive services plus future provision for roof mounted PV in line with college sustainability requirements. External works drainage design was undertaken with allowance made for following development sites in a below ground SUDS attenuation structure. Construction works were completed to allow the college to take possession of the site in September, resulting in project delivery from inception to handover within 12 months.
