Enabling works, Coventry University MP Consulting were appointed by Coventry University to provide structural engineering design and reporting for the £0.4M demolition of the Automotive and Aeronautical Engineering Building within the city centre campus, plus the infill to the facade of the retained building which originally adjoined the demolished structure. Moss A.I acted as Lead Consultant and Architect. Of upmost importance to the project was ensuring stability of the adjoining building structure which was known to be subject to long term creep deflection. A real time monitoring system was compiled by MP Consulting with strategically placed accelerometer equipment linked to a central data recorder to analyse vibration to the retained structure caused by the surrounding demolition works. With the alarm system in place sending alert emails to design team and contractor on site, the careful separation of adjoining structures was completed, allowing the remaining building structure to be safely demolished.
